The Oklahoma Aviator
As the owner and publisher of The Oklahoma Aviator, I appreciate your taking the time to read and learn a bit about The Aviator, an Oklahoma tradition.
Joe Cunningham started The Oklahoma Aviator in 1981. Joe was a legend in the world of Oklahoma aviation and created The Aviator to serve grass-roots general aviation. He created a vehicle for communicating the story of aviation in Oklahoma, past present, and future. A loyal cadre of advertisers joined with Joe, and they found The Aviator provided a convenient way to reach the general aviation market. Joe passed away in 1999 and The Aviator ceased publication for six months until it was reborn in 2000 under the guiding hand of Mike Huffman. Mike retained The Aviator style and flavor that Joe had started but updated the production techniques, printing and paper quality, and advertising capabilities. He expanded the circulation to include all areas of the state of Oklahoma and surrounding states.
I, Earl Downs, came onto the Oklahoma aviation scene in 1991 when I opened Golden Age Aviation Inc., a fixed-base operator (FBO) on the airport in Cushing, Oklahoma. That's when I first met Joe and his wife, Mary Kelly. I advertised in The Aviator to increase my business and by 1994 I was writing a monthly column for The Aviator entitled "Up With Downs." My interest in aviation writing continued to expand, and I began writing for AOPA and EAA publications. In 2003, Mike and his wife moved out of the state, and I seized the opportunity to become the owner of The Oklahoma Aviator.
Golden Age Aviation, Inc. is the parent company to The Oklahoma Aviator, and it is also an active participant in the new sport pilot movement.
In September 2004 I published my first issue of The Oklahoma Aviator and, with that issue, initiated more improvements to its printing and distribution methods. The Aviator's circulation stands at 4,000 per month at this time and continued expansion is planned.
Today, The Aviator still holds to the style and format that have set it apart from other aviation tabloids, and it serves its advertisers with a solid base of general aviation readers. Stories in The Aviator are written to hold the readers' attention, and Oklahomans see themselves on the pages of The Aviator. The stories and columns in The Aviator offer such a wide appeal that subscribers range from coast to coast and are fliers and non-fliers alike.
Ordered by subscription or found in numerous aviation businesses and FBOs, readers look forward to the stories and articles each month.
Please consider becoming a part of this Oklahoma tradition and allow us to bring your product to the attention of our loyal readers.
